We all want to stay living comfortably in our own home for as long as possible, where familiar walls, favorite chairs, and everyday routines bring peace. However, as we age, the home that once felt perfect can conceal hazards that we might overlook. During Fall Prevention Month, it’s a great time to inspect your space and make some adjustments.
Here are practical and realistic ways to reduce fall risks, most of which you can implement immediately.
What’s at Stake
- Falls are the leading cause of injury-related death for adults 65 and older. In 2021 alone, over 38,000 deaths resulted from falls.
- Nearly 3 million older adults visit the emergency department each year due to falls. Many falls are preventable.
- Studies have shown that home modifications, such as improved lighting, handrails, and non-slip flooring, can significantly reduce both the frequency and severity of falls.
Easy Ways to Fall-Proof Your Home
Here are changes you can make, room by room. Some are small. Some cost a bit more. But many are simple fixes that make a big difference.
- Living Areas and Hallways: Clear pathways. Move furniture so there’s room to walk without bumping into tables or cords. Remove loose throw rugs, or stick them down with non-slip backing. Keep things you reach for often at waist level so you don’t need a step stool.
- Stairways and Steps: Make sure stair treads are even. Fix any loose boards. If you have stairs, install handrails on both sides. Use bright lighting at the top and bottom, and consider glow-in-the-dark or illuminated switches if that helps.
- Bathrooms: Wet and slippery surfaces are common hazards. Use non-slip mats in tubs and showers. Install grab bars around the toilet and inside the shower. Consider a shower seat. Night lights are helpful anytime you need to move around in the dark.
- Bedroom: Keep things you need close by, even items like glasses and a flashlight. Make sure bedside lighting is easy to reach. Clear clutter so trips to the bathroom at night aren’t dangerous.
- Kitchen: Store heavy pots or frequently used items at reachable heights. Clean up spills right away. If making meals while standing is hard, have a chair you can sit in while prepping.
- Entryways and Outdoors: Make sure walkways, steps, and porches are free of tripping hazards. Fix uneven surfaces. Use railings for any steps. Even simple items like motion-activated lights or good porch lighting can improve safety.
Other Important Fall Prevention Strategies
- Check Your Eyes and Feet: Poor vision and foot pain or issues increase risk. Regular check-ups and comfortable, supportive footwear help.
- Strength & Balance Exercises: Regular movement helps, such as Tai Chi, gentle leg work, walking, or exercises prescribed by a physical therapist. The more balanced and strong you are, the less likely you are to lose footing.
Making Easy Changes
Fall risks may increase as we age, but they don’t have to define how we live. A few home changes and regular check-ins with your healthcare provider can dramatically reduce the risk. This September, take a walk through your home, make one or two fixes, and think about the support you want and deserve.
