The Heart of the Holidays
The holiday season is more than a flurry of errands, gift wrapping, and to-do lists. At its core, it’s about connection, taking the time to show the people in our lives that they matter. However, sometimes physical distance, mobility limitations, or memory changes make it harder to celebrate the way we used to.
That’s why we created this list of intentional, meaningful ways to celebrate with older loved ones. Whether you’re gathered around one table or connecting across time zones, there are always ways to bring love and light to the season.
1. Create a Shared Holiday Playlist
Music can bring generations together and spark beautiful memories. Invite your loved one to share their favorite holiday songs from their younger years, then mix them in with family favorites. Whether it’s Bing Crosby or Mariah Carey, playing a personalized playlist during the season can help create a fun atmosphere.
You can make a playlist together on Spotify, Apple Music, or YouTube. If your loved one isn’t tech-savvy, consider playing it for them during visits or sharing it through a speaker with help from a Companion.
2. Bake and Share a Family Recipe
Consider baking a beloved family recipe together, even if that means adapting it or making it in stages. Don’t just bake it for them, bake it with them. If that’s not possible in person, cook together on Zoom or send a homemade batch in the mail.
Not sure where to start? Try gathering and preserving a small “Family Holiday Cookbook” with photos and recipe cards to share.
3. Decorate Together
The simple act of decorating the home with string lights, candles, or ornaments can become a fun bonding experience. Even if your loved one lives in a smaller space, a Companion can help decorate and bring the spirit of the season to life with them.
4. Send a Holiday Memory Box
If you can’t be there in person, consider mailing a box filled with personal items:
- Printed photos from past holidays
- Scented candles or treats they love
- Handwritten notes from grandkids or family
- An ornament with a story behind it
5. Include Them in New Traditions
Maybe your family used to go caroling, but that’s no longer feasible. That doesn’t mean the tradition has to end.
Try:
- Virtual caroling over video call
- Reading a favorite holiday book aloud together
- Watching the same movie “together” from different places
- Playing festive games like trivia or bingo customized for all ages
Including older adults in updated versions of holiday traditions makes them feel seen and valued.
6. Make Room for Quiet Joy
It’s okay to opt for a quieter celebration. That might look like:
- Sharing tea and conversation with a Companion
- Sitting together and looking through old photo albums
- Enjoying a drive to see holiday lights
- Listening to classical holiday music by candlelight
Sometimes the most meaningful moments are the simplest.
7. Ask What Matters to Them
Every individual has different needs and preferences during the holidays. Ask your loved one:
- What makes the holidays feel special to you?
- Is there a tradition you miss?
- Would you like help preparing or celebrating this year?
These conversations show love and respect, and help your plans to reflect what truly matters to them.
